Our Mission

Our mission is to increase women’s participation in the political process and the number of women in elected positions, to achieve greater equality for women, and to support women candidates who will fight for reproductive freedom, publishing and implemen of the ERA, and access to affordable child care.

What We Do

LOCAL: The St. Louis Chapter of the National Women’s Political Caucus is a progressive, pro-choice,
non-partisan, grassroots membership organization dedicated
to identifying, recruiting, training and supporting women candidates for
elected and appointed office.


The STL Caucus offers:

  • Community for those interested in supporting our mission
  • Campaign training for new and future candidates
  • Endorsements
  • Financial donations to Caucus-endorsed candidates
  • Pathways to leadership for young people interested in women's issues, politics, and civic engagement

STATE: MOWPC, the Missouri State Women's Political Caucus provides:

  • Administrative connection between the local chapters and NWPC
  • Community for those across the state who support our mission
  • Support to state-wide candidates and initiatives and local candidates outside of local chapter areas
  • Candidate training
  • Guidance to the Ambassador Program women, which includes Caucus-membership, introductions to candidates and legislators, and a fast-track to leadership positions within the organization for women ages 18-25




NATIONAL: NWPC is the only national organization exclusively dedicated to increasing women’s participation in all political and public life roles:

  • Elected and appointed officials
  • Delegates to national party conventions
  • Judges in federal and state courts
  • Lobbyists
  • Voters
  • Campaign organizers


With state and local affiliates, 12 State Chapters, and 10 emerging chapters, our membership today spans the nation.

Gloria Steinem, author, lecturer and founding editor of Ms. Magazine

Shirley Chisholm, activist, former Congresswoman (1969-1983) and 1st black woman to run for president of the United States

Betty Friedan, activist and author of The Feminine Mystique

Fannie Lou Hamer, voting and women’s rights activist and civil rights leader

Bella Abzug, former Congresswoman (1971-1977) and former president of Women USA

Marcia Melitz, Betty Van Umm, Susan Block, Sally Barker, Vivian Eveloff, and Stephanie Tranen met at a speech by social activist and U.S. Representative Bella Abzug at the JCCA in Creve Coeur.


Congresswoman Abzug’s brief remarks included information on a new group called the National Women’s Political Caucus resonated with our founders. Little did they know that they were about to change the political landscape in the St. Louis area forever.
